Frank GIBSON Obituary

GIBSON, Frank. Born 19 February 1946. It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Frank Gibson Jnr PhD, aged 79, who left us peacefully on 21 May 2025 at Auckland Hospital, with his beloved wife, Rosie, beside him. Frank was a cherished husband, devoted and proud father, grandfather and great grandfather. He is survived by his wife Rosie, his children Frank Jnr Jnr., Danielle, Nicole and grandchildren. An extraordinary drummer, Frank's talent, drive and passion for music shaped an incredible career that spanned seventy years including over two hundred and fifty recordings, multiple Jazz Record of the Year awards and numerous tours around the globe. His contributions to New Zealand music are immeasurable and he leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire future generations. As a drum teacher, he taught a who's who of New Zealand's top drummers. Frank's warm and caring spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew him. The family wishes to express their heartfelt appreciation to the doctors and exceptional staff at Ward 61, Auckland Hospital, for their compassionate care during his final weeks. A celebration of his life and a future memorial concert are being held to celebrate Frank's remarkable life and legacy. Please contact [email protected] regarding these functions. Drum up a storm and rock the heavens, Frank. You will forever be in our hearts.

Frank tutored my son back in drum city in Balmoral when he was in his early 20s. He often took me to listen to him play upstairs opposite the Civic theatre as I introduced Gary to Jazz and the love of it. Gary has been living in Tokyo now for about 24years teaching English and married a sweet Japanese girl he met in Auckland. We send condolences to his family with love and respect. Dee Deed (Auckland)and my son Gary Albrecht ( Tokyo Japan ).

Frank was the drum teacher of my son, Alex Jarman who has played in gigs in London.
He still plays at special events such as Birthday celebrations even though he has a full time job as a Data Scientist in Melbourne these days and has a family. He is 48.

We extend our deepest sympathy to Rosie and family.  Frank was very fondly remembered by the late Len and Doreen Broadbent and their family who have happy memories of Frank and Alan jamming for hours in our home.  A great musician and friend through the years who brought music into all our lives.  He will be sadly missed
