Emil was my hero when I had an unexpected breech birth in Feb 1985. Doctor, midwife and nurses was panicking and room in disarray when Emil came in, calm and confident. He kindly took control and coached me to squat and gently eased my baby out inch by inch. Forever grateful, I consider he saved her life. Thank you Emil. A life well lived.

I have lasting memories of training with Emil as a first year medical student at St Thomas´s Hospital in London in 1958. It was a period of great change at the time. He went on to become a well respected surgeon in New Zealand and I went into general medicine.
For many years our intake held an annual reunion in London and it was a great delight to see Emil there on a couple of occasions over a period of more than fifty years having made the long journey from New Zealand.
My wife and I also had a wonderful welcome staying with Emil and Judith in their amazing house near Russell on our round the world trip in 2004.
There are a number of his contemporaries still alive in Britain and I have passed on the sad news to as many of those that I can contact.

I got to know Emil when I joined the Nostalgia choir which morphed into St Mary's Singers. A quiet, unassuming man with a twinlke in his eyes

A wonderful specialist who didn´t have an easy day with my surgery- I´ve never forgotten waking up after surgery to be told I was your only patient whose appendix you lost during key hole surgery, and how lucky I was that after 20 mins you found them without having to do further surgery. It did bring a smile to our faces.
Remember always your office being a reflection of a true gentleman.
RIP.

So sad Beautiful memories of Mr Nye delivering our son in 1989. It was such a joy to be your patient. I will never forget your words Nr Nye as Peter was born. "You have a Bull calf" A Bull calf had been born on our farm a couple of days earlier. Love to your beautiful family. Gay & David Bevan
