TO the glorious lady that encouraged me to run as a 4yr old and win a race at the Kerikeri Domain and to be presented with a prize by her father Syd Birchall followed by the bee stings Maisie treated me for at Omapere, The hosting you did for your cousin Arthur at the Papatoetoe club, and at your brothers funeral, for Desmond. What a sweet person.

In the quiet hours ahead Wen, when all the organization has finished and life moves forward, perhaps what's needed is simply this: the recognition that your mother was extraordinary, that your love for her was a masterpiece, and that your heart breaks because something irreplaceable has been lost.
She wasn't just your mother - she was your universe. You orbited around each other's light in the most beautiful mother-daughter relationship many of us have witnessed.
The way you spoke her name, your entire being transformed when you shared her stories - eyes brightening, voice softening, hands gesturing as if you were painting her back into the room with us. You became her in the most wonderful ways.
Maisiebel, you live on in a daughter who loves like a force of nature, the one who gives with her whole soul and makes the world brighter just by being in it. The house bought for you, those careful renovations - these were reflections of the love you taught, declarations that said, "You gave me a home in your heart; now let me give you one with these hands." She is woven into the very fabric of who you were, carrying your laugh, your loyalty, your fierce heart, someone who sees the world through your eyes - with wonder, with humour that lights up dark corners, with stubborn optimism that refuses to be dimmed. Every kindness she shows, every moment she chooses joy over cynicism, every time she extends grace over judgment - your song continues in the world.
Maisiebel, you absolutely crushed the hardest job in the world. You mastered motherhood, left a legacy, and did it all with huge doses of joy.
Well done, beautiful Maisiebel. Your light will never go out.
With profound admiration for the mother you were and the daughter you raised,
Annie
