The family of Eljas Kalevi Vihtari is sad to announce his passing on October 4, 2016, peacefully at home.
Eljas was born on February 10, 1928 in Alavirre, Finland. He married Annikki in June of 1954 and enjoyed 59 wonderful years of marriage together. They immigrated to Canada in 1957 to what was then Port Arthur, where he worked as a mechanic, welder and in the summers he commercial fished in Port Coldwell, eventually joining Local 628 as a welder/fitter where he was a member in good standing for 50 years. After his retirement Eljas became very active in the church and spent many of his days helping build the Hilldale Lutheran Church alongside his fellow volunteers.
Eljas will be remembered for his passion for fishing, always ready and willing to take his children, grandchildren and visitors out with him. He entertained us with his many inventions, wonderful stories and a sense of humour that would have us all laughing out loud. As his health suffered in the last few years and he had to slow down, he discovered a new passion, surfing the net and joining facebook where he quickly learned he could chat with hundreds of new and old friends from around the world always ready with a witty comment and happily counting the thumbs up he would receive.
Eljas will be sadly missed by his daughters Raija (Don Zatti), and Anne (Gord Santarossa), son Mike (Aphrodite), his sisters Esteri, Elli, Aila and brother Martti, numerous grandchildren, as well as great grandchildren. He is now gone to join his loving wife Annikki after three long years apart.
Funeral services for Eljas will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 11, 2016 at Hilldale Lutheran Church, 321 Hilldale Road, presided by Jari Lahtinen. Visitation for family and friends will begin one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hilldale Lutheran Church.

Echoes
The sound of your footsteps,
The things that made you smile,
The inventions that you made,
The clothes you liked to wear,
Your faith in God,
Your laughter,
Your voice,
Your kindness,
Your patience,
All the things that made you, you.
They are so familiar,
They have become our cherished memories,
They help us smile again,
They bring us comfort,
They are echoes.
Love, Lea Auvinen

Rakkaat Eljaksen omaiset!

Papa's "extended" family in Ottawa, Tsarouhas-Lacey (Afroditi) send our condolences for his passing. Athena will always remember him for his smiles and chuckles as the kids went crazy around him every time he came to visit. Famed for his Papa-suspenders and his respectful demeanor. Andreas will miss his kind soul and his gentle and respectful way as he observed everything with his hands quietly behind his back.
May Papa rest in peace and rejoice in reuniting with Mummu together in heaven.
Sincerely,
Kelly, Niki, Viki, Andreas and Athena
