Edward THEAKSTON Obituary

THEAKSTON, Dr Edward. (Auckland Medical School, commencing 1981). Died in peace at home March 1st 2023, aged sixty years, after suffering stoically from cancer. Thanks to Mercy Hospice and the Oncology team for all their care. His kindness, loyalty, wisdom, tenacity, humour and intelligence will be sadly missed by colleagues, friends and family, especially his mother Pam, siblings Nick, Emma and Richard, wife Robyn and children John, James and Elizabeth. He was passionate about his faith and work; serious about teaching and lifelong learning; and adored his growing family with the additions of spouses Yi Chung, Amy and Morgan and three grandchildren. Our lives are richer because of him. "Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day" A service to celebrate Edward's life will be held at GraceCity Church, Marewa Road, Greenlane tomorrow Tuesday, March 7st 2023 at 1.00 p.m. followed by private cremation. In lieu of flowers, donations in Edward's memory to either Mercy Hospice or Forest and Bird would be appreciated.

I echo all the things said about you Ed in the other messages. Patients with AML here in NZ owe you a lot because of your skill and tenacity in setting up the flow Minimal Residual Disease testing which enabled NZ to continue to take part in the UK based trials. Our UK colleagues used to speak so highly of you for both your intellect and also just who you were- 'so relaxed and yet so brilliant' was the comment from one internationally renown leader in the field! Thank you for all you achieved.

My condolences. Edward was a great medical registrar when he worked with me at the Auckland Blood transfusion Service and we accomplished many things. He leaves good memories and his reliability and enthusiasm in his work was greatly appreciated . WE drifted apart when we moved to Hamilton But I knew of his work elsewhere and his high reputation. WE all have suffered a loss but God is good and Edward's reward will no doubt be considerable
Every blessing to his family and keep on with his faith

Dear Eduardo you have left us way too soon. We will miss your intellect, critical viewpoints and quirky sense of humour. You have been your 'own man' as long as I have known you contributing enormously to the development of haematology expertise in Auckland over many years. We have enjoyed a strong collegial and personal relationship dating back more than two decades. Your support during Diagnostic Medlab days was invaluable and your unwavering loyalty during a difficult time was exemplary. You have always been a man of the highest integrity who has enriched our lives. Your resilience throughout your illness has been nothing short of remarkable as you have met the numerous challenges thrown at you, Robyn and the family. Thank you for the lasting memories, including our visit with you three short weeks ago, and most particularly all that you taught us on the self-appointed "Bordeaux Classification Committee". You deserve to rest in peace but you leave a huge hole in our lives.....goodbye dear friend....Paul Ockelford

Condolences to the Theakston family.
Edward was a RCPA haematology examiner for many years & distinguished himself as a fair & balanced colleague with an immense depth of knowledge & a quiet sense of humour. He set candidates at ease & brought out the best from them.
A great loss to the profession.

Our deepest condolences to such a loving close family. Edward's early death is a painful mystery. May comfort be taken in the knowledge that his solid faith enabled him to live life to the full and not fear the future. With love, Stephen, Dot and John.

I remember Edward from school days although once he went to medical school I lost contact with him. I only learned he was terminally ill a short time ago. However, I do recall meeting the family in 1990. I know he was a devoted and dedicated husband, father and doctor and it is tragic that he was afflicted so early in life. I offer my sincerest condolences. May he rest in God's love and peace.
