Sincere sympathy to all the Harwood family on the loss of such a dear (and amazing) lady. I have very fond memories of Mrs Harwood. My parents and I emigrated from the UK in 1957 and lived at the RNZAF base, and in 1960 I started school aged 5. I had no other relatives in NZ except for my parents so Mrs Harwood became the first other significant adult in my life. I have happy memories, such as all the class standing on frosty grass and Mrs Harwood coming around with a large steaming kettle of hot cocoa to fill our cups. One time I had to clean the classroom floor on my hands and knees, as per her instruction, no doubt I had been talking too much. I recall visiting the farm and helping to groom Maxine's lamb for calf club day, and also lots of gumboots and shoes at the back door. My brother Peter, and sisters, Helen and Carol were also taught by Mrs Harwood. I am grateful she was my first teacher, I could not have had a better start in my schooling life. RIP.

Sincere sympathy to all of Edna´s family. Edna and Allen gave many years to Pony Club at all levels. She was secretary for the Inter Pacific rally and travelled with the teams for many years. She donated her many Inter Pacific badges to the Association quite a few years ago and always followed the NZ teams on this venture. Edna had an outstanding memory and was a lively spirit on the Committee of Management. Sorry I am unable to attend her farewell she was an amazing lady and won´t be forgotten R.I.P. Edna

Riding for the Disabled (RDA) was formally introduced to New Zealand in 1962 by the President of the New Zealand Pony Club Association, Tom Atchison (1909-1999).
Riding for Disabled (Waikato Group) Incorporated was formed in 1972 by an enthusiastic group of people who wanted to see Riding for Disabled groups established in the Waikato. It was one of the first Groups in the country. New Zealand Riding for Disabled was established in the same year.
Two of its founding members Edna Harwood and Colin Bailey, together with Tom Atchison amongst others, set up the Group on grounds out towards Raglan, before moving to Foreman Rd.
Edna worked tirelessly for the benefit of riders with disabilities, both as a Committee member and as President of the Group for twenty years. She contributed so much to our community.
In 2006, RDA Waikato formed a partnership with HCC, and moved onto the purpose built Vaile Rd site. RDA Waikato now operates as an independent Group, Waikato Equitherapy. However, the core values remain the same and we continue to endeavour to provide a great service to our special needs riders, just as Edna would have wanted. She will be long remembered. May she rest in peace.

To the Harwood Family. My deepest sympathy at your loss. I have wonderful memories of my primary school years at Te Rapa School. Mrs Harwood truly was a fantastic teacher and was very caring and patient as well. I can still dance the Maxina that she taught us all for the Fancy Dress Ball some 62 years ago.

Dear Elaine, Phillip, Maxine and Families,

On behalf of myself, the Haynes family, my husband Paul Haynes (Deceased) son of Colin & Georgina Haynes, of Papakura, I offer you condolences on the the loss of dear, wonderful Edna.
How close the Haynes family from Papakura were to her & you all over the years.
Paul spoke so fondly of her & the happy times they spent with the Harwood family.
So precious are the memories of Edna's 100th Birthday which Paul & I shared with you all.
We were lucky to have also visited you, Elaine, & Edna at your home in between Paul's hospital stays. I used to email her a couple of times a year, & the last one I received from her, Edna would have been 102 ! How incredible.
Sorry I cannot attend Edna's service. However I am close in thoughts with you all. The loss of your beloved Edna will leave a huge void, but many wonderful memories.
Edna was a lady who cared for everyone giving her all in the Community & elsewhere. A great example & inspiration to us all.
Blessings.
Judy Haynes

I have included 3 photos of Edna talking with Paul & one of Edna, all taken at her 100th Birthday. A most memorable day indeed.

To Elaine, Phillip, Maxine and Families, sincere Sympathy to you all. Such a wonderful lady. A true inspiration to all that she was involved with in the CWI, Pony club and Te Rapa School and Community. Celebrating her 100th birthday was amazing with her still knowing her pupils some who will be in their sixties upwards. I could only ever call her Mrs Harwood even though many a time in the later years she would ask me to call her Edna. RIP Mrs Harwood.
