The Procter Library team
November 6, 2024
Moe mai ra e rangatira. The Procter Library team will remember Doug, and his lovely lady Pat, fondly - every Friday for the past 20 years, Doug and Pat would stop in for a chat and a laugh as they picked up their books.
Doug was a keen supporter of the library and supported the Archive Room, making many donations of materials over the years that were vital in recording the growth of Kerikeri.
At Christmas, we were always spoilt with Pat's delicious (and always first in first serve!) home made Christmas mince pies and a lovely nod of encouragement from Doug. Both Doug and Pat embodied community generosity and the difference individuals make to creating a better collective, and the Procter Library team wish Doug a peaceful eternal rest.

Doug always came into the Library on a Friday, and was my go to person for any local history questions. Will miss having a laugh and a catch up with him. My condolences to Pat and family.

Perhaps someone in the family tree may be interested in my family comments. Doug and Harold's father- Uncle Harold to us, was my grandfather's brother. I don't think we ever met Doug or his brother and of Aunty Toots only her accent. The house on the main street of Kawakawa with the train to Opua in the middle of the street was fascinating to a youngster. Opua became home for Uncle and our renting a bach holidays at Russell included a call to uncle. Very deft at rowing us, my sister Ruth and me out in the harbour fishing. Uncle would come to visit his sister in law, our Granny Rose Turner at 31 Murdoch Rd in Auckland and I recall a trellis affair he made for Granny to allow here plants to grow up. Uncle Harold and Grandad leaving Romilly St in Hobart when their parents' marriage ended is one shrouded in mystery and awe. That 2 young boys emigrated to NZ, what influenced their decision, travelling alone, arrangements made by whom or just themselves once they arrived in Whangarei and making a future for themselves. Quite amazing for us to consider. Doug's passing is a link to the past for our family

It was my honor and privilege to be Doug and Pat's home support carer on and off over the last few years. Doug always had time for me, and would often share stories from his youth, even stories about my own father as a child in the movie theater!
He was a gentleman and always made me feel welcome in their home.
I will miss his gentle spirit and kindness and witty sense of humor greatly.
All my love to Pat and whanau.
Our community has lost one of its most loved and cherished men.

Our dear neighbour's for most of my childhood/teen life. My first job was working for Mr and Mrs Turner folding circulars..delivering to mailboxes then as an usher at Cathay Theatre. Mr Turner use to let us see what he does in his film room...and would often stand outside the projector room on the balcony and make sure we were all behaving. Spent a few family evenings together both in Hobson Ave and Rangitane. Our families grew up together and will always be whanau to each other. Rest in love Mr Turner..the stars are now your forever projector lights..sending prayers and aroha to you all at this sad time.

As a regular user of the Turner center both as an arts practitioner and audience member I am so grateful to Doug for his vision and determination in seeing this venue come to life. I will always remember his enthusiasm when asking about what creative project you were undertaking. He had a generous smile and made you feel seen and well supported. The arts will forever appreciate his, and his families, generousity of spirit and strength to help creativity thrive in our community. Thank you Doug. You will be missed.
