Dorothy Sokolyk Obituary

Dorothy Sokolyk October 24, 1922 - May 19, 2017 Dorothy lived by three maxims: 1. Embrace your opportunities (Dorothy) 2. Never, never, never give up (Churchill) and 3. Anything worth doing is worth doing well (Aristotle). These she applied equally to rest stops on summer road trips to Cape Cod and to major career decisions.

Dorothy obtained her BA at Sir George Williams University and her MA at Columbia.

Dorothy was a passionate advocate for the rights of children with special needs. She devoted her career to sensitizing others to the humanity of those who had difficulty communicating.

Following teacher training at MacDonald College, Dorothy worked as a principal at a school in Kilmar, Quebec where she met the love of her life, Bohdan Sokolyk. After they married, Dorothy worked as a Guidance Counsellor for the PSBGM until she became one of the first professors hired in the Department of Special Education at the Faculty of Education at McGill.

Dorothy was a graceful and effortless dancer whether in Dutch clogs, high heels or on ice skates. She cultivated a prize winning garden with many rare plants. Dorothy loved fashion and sewed most of her own clothes from Vogue patterns including her ball gowns.

Dorothy loved to entertain, taking real joy in cooking and decorating her home for special events for family and friends. Any new friend made became her friend forever.

A celebration of Dorothy's life will take place on June 3 at Chateau Westmount, 4800 de Maisonneuve West, at 2:30 pm. Should you wish to offer a tribute to Dorothy's life, a donation to the National Initiative for Eating Disorders may be made in her name by contacting [email protected]

Dorothy was one of my teachers as I studied for my M.Ed in Special Education at McGill. Because of her I was offered a part time teaching job at McGill teaching teachers who were working on their diploma in special education. I met with her insisting that I was not ready for this. She listened, invited me to come back to see her in a few days when she outlined the course for me and recommended certain texts. I went on to give a successful course for several years thanks to her.
She was a great lady. Please accept my condolences.

Dear Diane,
I was saddened to learn of your mother's recent passing. The obituary is clear, heartfelt, and the "determinative issues" well identified. I see from your ease with line dancing that being a "graceful and effortless dancer" runs in the family. Please accept my heartfelt condolences.

Dear Diane and family,

I am very saddened to learn of your mum's passing. She and your late dad were my next-door neighbours on Ballantyne North for 16 years. Dorothy was always an engaged person who enjoyed life. She will be missed.
