To Grant, Jan and families.
Des was (Gwen ) my mother's favourite cousin and the kindest, brightest person - always there to help. A great conversationalist and so interesting to talk to. I will miss our phone calls. A great loss for our family and his many friends. Sincere sympathy to you all.
Regards, Noleen.

Hello Grant Jan and Whanau
A few thoughts from England re Uncle Des
Intrigued to hear he was named after Lord Desmond. I did not know that Grandad was reading
about him when shelled in France.Grandad did tell me about how bruised he was after
he came to .Also how nice the Canadian nurses were.Des was just as tough .His father proudly
displayed a photo of Des in an English hospital .He was dressed in navel uniform standing to attention
and talking to the King. Not an easy ask if you have just had appendicitis.
Fortunately this did not put him off marrying an English girl.A tradition continued by myself and
our son.Frances and I were always appreciative of the effort Wyn and Des made to catch up ,when
passing through Auckland ,enroute to England or the Himalaya.
My earliest recollection of my uncle was visiting his ship in Wellington.I think it was the Lachlan.
If so then they had just surveyed the coast off Fiordland At that time the most accurate maps of
the area were those of Captain Cook.No doubt we all have Des Price tales of exploration and
adventure As a child touring round the Bay of Islands we heard about paddling the waka at Waitangi
and submarines submerging like dive bombers.
When Des and his brother Eric attended to the dish washing our fellow campers were always
entertained.
Throughout the years he has entertained with his special leek meal and double whiskies.
He did confide that his time in the navy meant that he could not be there for his family when
he was needed but I feel his commitment and interest in his immediate and the extended
whanau ,friends and shipmates has been quite special.
We regret his passing but cherish his life and memory.
