Des Kelly got my father Nigel Cook to design a house for him. Des was a wonderful client and Nigel who died last year loved knowing him and appreciated the friendship that grew out of the experience.

It was my privilege to have Des as a lecturer at Wellington Teachers College in 1977. I learned so much from him and his teaching and kind support shaped my life in ways that are hard to express.

To the family of Des as I knew him. Sincere condolences. He was one of my lecturers at Training College in the 70's. A remarkable man, capable, talented and loved by many of us in his classes. I remember he had a party at his Northland home once and we were talking. He said one of the nicest things about me in my whole life. We were talking about the fact I had scored A;s in my university papers (done while at Training College) and the fact that my parents wouldn't allow me to study so I had to leave school without earning University Entrance.. He said 'you'll have to go further to find out how smart you are'. I have never forgotten him. It would have been 1971-1973. Thank you Des. I will always remember you fondly and with respect for who you were.
