Derek and I, and we two couples, were on the same page. Humour, sports, four-legged friends, a glass or two of red and classy motor cars; not to mention almost the same age. We loved coming to see Derek and Sally when we visited New Zealand and once even babysat the four-legged one. We will miss him as you all will but we have wonderful memories to fall back on.

We valued Derek and his friendship. We had many, many enjoyable conversations over the decades. Sally and he were so generous with their warmth and companionship. Most recently at the February Gold Coast International Bridge Congress, where Derek with his true Bridge talent and his long standing equally talented partner, defeated many worthy opponents to come first in a major event. The dinner that night will be one we always will remember. We will miss him.

When I first met Derek thirty years ago, we discovered that we had attended the same high school in England many years before and had many shared interests. Remarkably, the first three cars we had owned were the same; an Austin Seven, then a Mini and an Austin Healey. How well I remember the Mini Cooper rallies and the classic car auctions we attended together. And, we had both married Kiwi wives! A warm and generous man with many interests and friends, Derek loved life and gave so much of his time, energy and love to so many. And, he so loved his dogs!
Love you, Derek. Heartfelt condolences to Sally and family.

So very sad to read this. Derek was mine and Pete´s boss for 10 plus years when he owned Clearlite Bathrooms in Auckland. The very best boss, and became a very good friend, sharing happy times at his beloved Bach in Mokau. He will be missed deeply by his beloved Sal, and extended family. RIP boss and friend.

Dear Sally and family. I was shocked and saddened to hear of Derek´s sudden passing. I have worked with him for many years and will miss him. I have always admired his sharp intellect and family focus. I also enjoyed our catch ups, hearing about his travels and seeing the latest vehicle added to the car collection. May he rest in peace.

I met Derek first about 22 years ago when I took my little pup Bosco to Milford Beach for a morning walk. Derek was the first to greet us both, with his adored "Monty", his beautiful retriever. The two boys were a similar age, and despite their considerable size difference, became the best of walking buddies - and Derek befriended me, and was one of the most interesting, kindest, engaging people I have ever known. A true gentleman. I looked forward to our morning walks and chats so much, as we enjoyed beautiful Milford beach in all weathers, with the other "Milford Dog Walkers". Both Derek and Sally became wonderful friends to meet up with on the beach or in Cecil Road, friends and much-loved neighbours to many. I am deeply saddened to hear of Derek´s passing, and I know how deeply loved he was by Sally and their family, and what a great loss he must be to you all. I feel privileged to have known dear Derek, and I´ll remember him always with great affection and respect, especially when I wander along Milford Beach. Rest in Peace, Derek. Love and light, dear Sally. Michele
