We are very saddened by the news about David´s passing away. Our sincere condolences to David´s family. He was a really special person, an excellent mathematician and a kind, generous, and warm man. We are absolutely privileged that we had an opportunity to meet him in our life and be honoured with his friendship. He will stay forever in our hearts.

My story is deeply personal. I came to New Zealand in 1973 as a political refugee. I did not know any English. David interviewed me in Russian and even though I had no documents at the time arranged for me to be accepted to do a PhD. Six months later, after my documents materialised and I gave a talk on my progress, he arranged for a generous Government scholarship. His kindness and ability to deal with practical matters allowed me to become what I wanted to be - a scientist. There are no words to describe my gratitude. I was incredibly lucky to have met him. His life was a celebration of intelligence and goodness. I am sorry he had to go now. My condolences to his family.
