I met David via Rex Benson, for whom I was one of his Kropotkin checkers (and very occasionally inspiration!. We three shared several sessions at the pub in Ellerslie when Rex and Judith visited us Auckland. More recently I enjoyed similar sessions over at Sue Green's. We lost touch after I fractured my spine in 2022.

David was a good friend and hard worker (after noon). We met 40 years ago.
Wake in Wellington 2pm 15 June at Southern Cross tavern.
and same time in Auckland at the Cavalier, Ponsonby.

PS I still can't do cryptic crosswords.

I knew David for more than 70 years. Lyall Bay Primary school, Habonim (Jewish Youth Group) when we were teens, flatting together in Sydney, singing in the Monde Marie. I last saw him on a brief visit to Wellington late last year. I knew the whole family. We shared many, many common links. I am so sad that my cryptic crossword friend has moved on. Rest in Peace, Dovidl, I will raise a glass to you tonight.

Sincere sympathy Ann and Brendon, Judith and all family. We were so pleased to renew our long acquaintance with David a few months ago. We enjoyed his crosswords in The Listener and admired his ability to construct. His photograph herein brings a smile and memories from long ago to be treasured.

Davos was the soul of eloquence; able to elucidate and explain without rancour or malice a good friend who shall be sorely missed by all those who knew him. RIP

We were friends with David from the late 60's in Auckland. I suspect we met in the Kiwi Hotel,or somewhere similar. We all shared the love of red wine, music and art.David's sense of humour and sharp wit were endearing. He loved a party, yet always maintained a quirky independence and a healthy need for privacy. We still use the rolling pin that he gave us for a wedding present in 1975(and no David,Sue has never had to use it to keep me in line!) You almost made it to our 50th Anniversary. We cherish the gift, your friendship and your memory. Rest in Peace David. Jim and Sue Edge
