David was my hero when I was a little boy. I was three and he was eight when he first came to England - my kiwi cousin. I followed him everywhere. I realised as I grew up that everyone looked up to him, it wasn’t just me - looked up to him and loved being with him. He was always modest but had what seemed like effortless ability in a whole range of skills from engineering to business. But he always struck me as someone who put all that behind the really important things that matter - his family and friends. I last saw David two years ago when he stayed with us to attend a friend’s wedding here in the UK. He made a huge impression on our children. Our older son was doing exams at the time and was very anxious. He remembers how David calmed him and gave him confidence and he’s never forgotten it. I’m certain David made an impression like that on many other people. I will miss him.

Dear Short whanau. I wanted to extend my deepest condolences to you all on David's passing. Sonia contacted me with the news and our shock and sadness was slowly replaced by the shared memories we have of David. I met David via Sue and he and Marcus graciously welcomed me into their Anglesea construction zone. To this day, a standout year in my life as we all navigated our university paths and pursuits. The tight-knit family we created there in 1988 was facilitated by the energy and dynamic everyone brought to the house but it was David and Marcus who kept the kids under control or tried to, and who made it an incredible place to call home. So many fond memories of coffees on the back deck listening to the Velvet Underground, Pavlov's Dog, Van Morrison or some grunge kiwi band David was fond of. Memories of shared dinners. Massive parties. Bonfires. Laughter, tears, adventures, real Uni flat culture living. Thank you David for making that happen. We all parted ways after the sale of Anglesea and we all moved on with our lives and loves, but for that brief beautiful year in 1988. You made magic happen David. Sending you all my love and thoughts and I'm imagining you David, hanging out with Lou Reed with your wrap around shades on and that great grin of yours. Letting Lou know what a grip he had on a bunch of renegade kiwis there in 88. Dance on my friend. Arohanui. Zamon. PS Love to you Sue, we'll connect next time im in NZ and the photo is via Sonia and our recent convo about David. XO
