THE COAL TRIP!
Around 1962 Mait Pasley & I from the Wellington Passenger Department did a West Coast visit to Travel Agents with Dave. We drove by rental car via Otira and somehow Dave knew the spots the train drivers dropped small amounts of coal by the roadside to be picked later for their personal use (only steam in those days!) By the time we got back to Chhristchurch after numerous stops Dave had a bootfull of coal - enough to last a few weeks.(Never heard what the rental company said!)
It was always the first comment we made whenever we met over the years -'How's the Coal'!
Havn't seen much of Dave & Diana over recent years but will always have fond memories of our Savill days.
Travel well Dave and may you find many stashes along the way.
Sincere condolances to Diana and the family.
