David GALLOWAY Obituary

GALLOWAY, David John. On December 6, 2014, at Otago Community Hospice, Dunedin, after a short illness; aged 72 years. Much loved husband of Patricia Payne/Galloway, loved brother of Judy Faris (Alexandra) and Sandra Woodham (Christchurch). Special thanks to Dr Wayne Morris, Dr Kirsten Holst, the staff of Ward 8C, Dunedin Hospital and the Otago Community Hospice. In accordance with David's wishes, a private cremation has been held. Respecting David's wishes, Patricia plans a Celebration of his life in late February 2015 in Dunedin. Patricia is deeply grateful to our families, and also the numerous friends and colleagues from New Zealand and around the world for their generosity and messages. David and Patricia were able to hear scores of messages and were at the same time uplifted, humbled and moved by the expressions of respect, support and love. My sincerest condolences. I am very sad to hear this news. As a young artist/illustrator sketching at the museum one day in 1995, David took an interest and was very supportive. He showed his workplace, and bought one of my pieces, a view of the main gallery. He introduced me to Peter James who also gave me much support and friendship. A great loss.

My sincerest condolences. It is such a shock to hear of David's death. I worked for David as undergraduate at the Natural History Museum one summer. I will always remember his enthusiasm and energy for lichens - and life in general. Most importantly I remember his great kindness, generosity and encouragement to someone just starting in botany, sadly a rare thing. I actually still have the note he gave me when I returned to my studies. He was an exceptional man who I will remember fondly. A sad loss.
