David GALLOWAY Obituary

GALLOWAY, Dr David John On December 6, 2014, at the Otago Community Hospice, Dunedin; aged 72 years. Much loved and respected brother-in law of Alison and Peter Holst, Clare and Ian Ferguson, uncle of Kirsten and John Matthews, Simon Holst and Sam Ford, great uncle of Liz, Jen, Bella and Theo. Released now to eternal fieldtrips, and unlimited tramping in fine weather 'on the tops'…happy (and fruitful) lichen hunting! Thanks to the staff at Otago Community hospice, Ward 8C at Dunedin Hospital, and Doctors Morris, Jackson and Costello for their care of David, and to the wonderful hospice nurses who not only cared for David, but for Patricia and Kirsten.

My sincerest condolences. I am very sad to hear this news. As a young artist/illustrator sketching at the museum one day in 1995, David took an interest and was very supportive. He showed his workplace, and bought one of my pieces, a view of the main gallery. He introduced me to Peter James who also gave me much support and friendship. A great loss.

My sincerest condolences. It is such a shock to hear of David's death. I worked for David as undergraduate at the Natural History Museum one summer. I will always remember his enthusiasm and energy for lichens - and life in general. Most importantly I remember his great kindness, generosity and encouragement to someone just starting in botany, sadly a rare thing. I actually still have the note he gave me when I returned to my studies. He was an exceptional man who I will remember fondly. A sad loss.
