Constance MASON Obituary

MASON, Constance Dianne (nee Hargreaves). 21 January 1947 - 17 December 2020. It is with deep grief that we announce the passing of Connie. She died peacefully at Whakatane Hospital, and was ready to go after a long period of illness and debilitation. We thank the staff of Whakatane Hospital for their excellent care over the 1.5 weeks she was with them. As our mum was proud of us, we are proud of her for all that she has achieved - her deep commitment to the groups and schools that she became involved with - Kawerau Central Kindergarten and School, the SPCA, St John's Ambulance, CWI, and Probus; her careers as a nurse, in banking and as a legal secretary; the court case that she helped win against gender discrimination in the workplace in the 1980s. Mostly, Connie loved people - she was very social, loved to talk and retained a deep interest in what made people tick. She retained an encyclopedic knowledge of the people that she had met and known over the course of her life. She retained a bright interest in life - engaging in new technology, enjoying trips away, new activities, and lunches out. Her stoicism and adaptability were remarkable. She will be missed by her children - Janette, Brian and Morag, Glen and Michelle, and her grandchildren, Halle and Skyler, as well as her wider family. But we know that she was looking forward to her next adventure, and reuniting with her husband, Fred, and others that have gone before her. At Connie's request, we will not be holding a formal funeral. A wake will be held in the new year. Date TBA. I'm so sorry for your loss Mason family. Connie was such a wonderful kind hearted person. I appreciated how she took an interest in me and my dog Buddy. She had a way of connecting with people. She lived a fascinating life and would light up when we would talk about it and her family. She was incredibly proud of her family and would express it all the time. I know she felt so lucky and thankful to have Janette taking such great care of her for so many years. It meant a lot to her to remain in her own home. It was an honour to get to know your mum these last couple of years. I hope she's at peace with her Fred and can finally be free. Thinking of you in this difficult time. Kind regards, Emma
