It is with deep sadness to learn of Colleen's passing. She was such an optimistic and positive person who made a lasting influence on toi Maori - both as an artist and an educator. Her New Zealand Honour was a reflection of this contribution and of her warmth and aroha. My sincere condolences to the Urlich whanau. On behalf of the Elam School of Fine Arts I offer our aroha at this time. Colleen was a pioneer of Maori ceramic arts and her Masters Thesis on the relationship of older and contemporary practice to Lapita pottery was highly regarded.

So sad to read of the death of Colleen.
Though busy with her own work when we were students at Northland Polytech, Colleen was never too busy to help other people. She was a warm and generous person, as well as being a top world class artist.
My heart felt sympathy to all her colleagues and family.

It is with great sadness in our hearts that we have lost a great Artist, Rangitira and stalwart within our NZ Arts Community. Colleen's presence was like the great Kauri standing tall & strong for her fellow compatriots and leading the way forward with her tireless works for the Arts. Arohanui Colleen, you have served us well.
