I unfortunately never “knew” Colin in the usual sense, although he and my father were first cousins of similar age. They spent some colourful years of their childhood together when their respective fathers - accompanied by their wives, two of the Rowe sisters - helped build part of the New Zealand railroad at a place called Beach Camp, near Gisborne, around 1930.
Many years later - 78, to be exact - Colin dictated a set of memoirs which described that period of his life. I was lucky enough to be given access to them and found them both fascinating and entertaining. Colin's excellent recollections of many of his family members and colourful descriptions of their characters led to an online genealogy project which has since united many of our family members - across at least 3 continents - in a way none of us could ever really have imagined. I don't know for certain if Colin ever grasped the real significance of what he started, but for many of us it has been an eye-opener and something to treasure going forward - perhaps one of his smaller legacies, but one that has already touched the lives of many people.
Sincerest condolences to Oonagh, Terry, John and Elaine; from every member of the Cheek family in South Africa. Our thoughts will be with you on Saturday.

Colin was dad's cousin in law. Colin lived in the next street from us in Westmere and was very well loved and respected by my parents. My dad looked up to him more than almost any other in his community. He has been an influence and a character throughout my life to the McGinness family. Dad had specifically chosen Colin to speak at his funeral. He is well loved by the McGinness Family. I'm sure Oonagh and dad's brothers have many tails to tell. Our love is with Oonagh, Terry, John and Elaine and their families right now. Losing a dad is not the best but we don't wish people to suffer. Colin was also a Rotarian as is Elaine. All community service is good community service, no matter which organisation. Congratulations Colin on a brilliant life you've had and in the eyes of all the McGinness's .. I could quite safely say I think you are an outstanding man. RIP
