Christopher WRAGGE Obituary

WRAGGE, Christopher Clement. Born October 18, 1944. Passed away on October 05, 2016. Christopher Wragge, 71 of Waiheke Island, Auckland, passed away from terminal illness on Wednesday, October 5, 2016 at his home, his beloved wife Ping at his side. A self-proclaimed tree hugger and eco-warrior, Christopher was a trail blazer for the health of the Hauraki Gulf and all things of the natural world, a man for whom the passion of living his truth was foremost to all his actions, a rascal and sensational cook (inspiring in all his children a love of good food), he will be remembered for his extraordinary conviction, unabashed honesty, independent thinking and deep caring of the land. He also loved fishing, swimming naked in the ocean, classical music and jazz. Trained as an Engineer at the University of Auckland, he worked tirelessly for the protection of heritage buildings in Newmarket, Auckland, and devoted his last 20 years to work on the Hauraki Gulf, co-founding the Waiheke Island Community Planning Group and Hauraki Classroom. There will be 2pm service at Manukau Memorial Gardens, Magnolia Room, 361 Puhinui Road, Saturday 8th October 2016. Christopher will be dearly missed by his beloved wife Ping Lee-Wragge; children Kimberly Sumner, Melissa Fletcher, Christopher Ingleby Wragge, Ballinger Wragge; five grandchildren, Gabby, Josh and Ben Sumner, Siena and Anika Fletcher. With bravery and sincerity, rest peacefully, go well. We love you.

Today I cooked a recipe again that Chris taught me some 14 years ago whilst on a boat off the shore of Waiheke and I came to thinking about him again and what a profound impression he had made on me.

I wish he was still around for me to thank for taking me under his wing and showing me a braver path in life. it took me a decade for his wisdom to sink in but most of it has and I'm sure its only a matter of time before the rest finds it slight to turn on in my mind.

He was the teacher that appeared when I needed him but I as a student was not ready, it is only now that I approach my 50th year that I can see how profound an impression he left on me as a much younger man.

Much love for his memory and for Ping
