Bernie was a great man with some outstanding achievements. He operated advanced avionics, but I recall watching him operate a microwave, he pushed buttons to get it started and timed it with his watch :-). He was very kind to his grandchildren and they will sorely miss him. I was talking to Dnnis Stewart who worked with Brenie At Thames Aerial in Dargaville He expressed how much Bernie was respected.

So sorry to hear of Bernie´s passing, l have only recently found him and asked him to become a member of New Zealand Bomber Command Association and was preparing to send him his badge! Did manage to exchange emails with Bernie and send Mark Brain from RNZAF to visit him recently, An extraordinary man with a career as long as your arm and some amazing stories to tell. The staff at at Ernest Rutherford were most helpful in getting me in contact with him and l could tell how much they all adored him. Condolence to all his very large and loving family.
Here is part of an amusing email Bernie sent me .

Always on returning to boarding school, Nelson Collee, I used to go to the local?PieCart" for a : pea, pie and pud".It was a meatpie, mashed spud and peas. It cost nine pence. - coffee too.
Different nowadays.
Kind regards
Berni

Bernie had a long and very successful life. Doing incredible things and achieving so much. What a man!!!!!! He was definitely my hero, and I always looked up to him. When visiting New Zealand It was always nice to see him, and when my daughter Jane and Rob her husband came out with me, Bernie took us to the farm he grew up on, and we visited Omaka Aviation Museum which he enjoyed showing us around. All the family here in Wales and England have many memories which we all treasure of this great man.
Our thoughts are very much with all our family in N.Z right now. Sleep well Bernie with all our love.
