I had the privilege of being Charlie's Deputy Principal and regarded him as a mentor. He was a man of principle, with strong Christian values, and in that context, without any egotistical vanities; eg......Charlie as Principal on student mufti day, resplendent in jandals, beach shorts and T-shirt delivering his address to a school assembly, acutely aware that handling stress was about having fun. That acuity was also seen in his perceptive appraisal of colleagues. I remember a young redheaded first year teacher who was finding his way at MRGS....within three months Charlie was predicting that this person was principal material .....sure enough, 25 years later that prophecy was fulfilled- with distinction.
I also remember Charlie as the ultimate family man. He was justifiably proud of his five children. all of whom have turned out to be fine citizens and a credit to their parents..... also Verna, his wife, a great support to him, and in her own right a respected principal of an Auckland Grammar School. His anecdotes of freedom camping under canvass warrant a book alone.
Charlie was taken too early, but he was one of the lucky ones; he could look back on his life and realise that he'd made a significant difference for the good. That is his legacy.

Hello Verna and family. I have just received an invitation from Nick Tuiali for a function to remember and celebrate Charlie.......I've just checked Google and 5 minutes ago learned he had passed away. Since I left MRGS 27 years ago I have frequently thought of Charlie, and the memories of a man I regarded as a mentor and role model. His passion, principled leadership and insight will be abiding memories. In an age of outcomes you Verna and Charlie can be proud of not only your enduring contributions to MRGS but also of your fine children: Bruce, Bryan, Keith and Jill. Charlie was special and so are you all.
I would have certainly attended the ceremony, but Carol and I are off overseas on the 28th of this month.
Sincere condolences,
Warren and Carol Seastrand

Verna and family, my thoughts are with you in the loss of a very special man. Charlie was my first head of department at MRGS in 1972 and he was a wonderful support and advisor. A relationship with the Dowdle family was formed then which I will always treasure. Kindest regards to you all, Lynda Syms
