Our family were very sad to hear of the passing of Calder. My Dad would often tell us about Calder's many amazing achievements and playing with the amazing Cleo Lane and Johnny Dankworth.
At my Dad's 90th birthday Calder played a wonderful piece of music he wrote for him and everyone there will never forget it and how moving it was.
Even though words are never enough we send our condolences and thoughts for Calder's family at this sad time.
Marie, Donald and Ian Stewart.

I am truly saddened to hear of the passing of Calder. He was not only a dear friend, but an inspirational educator, with an uncanny ability to infect all those around him with a passion for jazz. Without him, my life would have taken a completely different, unimaginable path, and I am certainly not alone. I thank him for his patience and support, for the energy he put into the bands, and for the joy he brought to myself and so many others through music. Dunedin was lucky to house such a world class individual. Heartfelt condolences to Lesley and his family, and the extended Dunedin music community.

Dear Leslie and family
I wish to send my condolences to you all at this sad time and to congratulate you Leslie as the woman beside Dunedin's and New Zealand's greatest jazz icon. We often forget to appreciate the difficulties associated with being the artist's partner. I had many great times and laughs with Calder and his dry sense of humour at 4ZB recording studios, playing the Dunedin Sweet Series and the Octets Radio Jazz Programme. Calder was a hard taskmaster, always seeking perfection and his forthrightness helped us all in our careers. He was one of music's true gentlemen and be sorely missed as such. I am unable to make it to Calder's farewell however my thoughts and blessings are with you all. Love and blessings, Ivan Hamilton

Calder did so much in promoting the art form Jazz in Dunedin and I have watched some of the YouTubes of his various Big Band performances with great interest. Brother in law, Lou McConnell also kept me up to date with the Savoy ventures. May he rest in peace and we never forget him
