James NICHOLSON Obituary

NICHOLSON, James Robert (Jim). On 2 January 2026. Beloved husband of the late Mary. Much loved father and father- in-law of Dave and Monique, Tony and Kathryn, Paul and Mirella, Tania (deceased) and Duane Dalton. Cherished Grandad of Blake, Sam, Henry, Sofia, Joshua, Max, Aless, Tayla, Charlie and Mattie. A devoted father and gifted pianist, Jim was a man of quiet strength, kindness and humility. His love of music was matched only by his love for his family and friends. His warmth, compassion and gentle sense of humour brought comfort, joy and lasting memories to all who were fortunate enough to share time with him. A service for Jim will be held on Saturday 10 January 1.30pm at St Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Shakespeare Road, Milford.

I was very sad to hear about Jim´s passing. Mary was one of my best friends in Tamworth, NSW - through playing tennis. She followed me to Wellington after I moved here in 1960 and I remember her meeting Jim at the bank. After Jim and Mary got married, they took over the flat that my husband, Denis, and I had in Tyne Street, Island Bay. Our families enjoyed nice times together while Jim and Mary lived in Wellington and we kept in touch after they moved to Auckland. Jim and Mary attended my daughter, Jillian´s, wedding in 1997 and Denis and I attended Tony´s wedding in Auckland soon after. Condolences to the family.

So sorry to hear that Jim has passed away. I had the pleasure of working with him in Bank if NSW Auckland overseas department back in late 60s and early 1970s. Jim and Mary were both very helpful to me as a young transferee from Sydney. That was over 50 years ago and I have never forgotten him as being such a lovely boss to work for. RIP Jim.
