Brian was the head of New Zealand Grape Growers Council, when I was working as a young "Exchange Student" from Germany during the vintage 1981 on his farm (and on some others in the area) in Kumeu, Huapai Valley. He and also his wife were great helpful and almost fatherly friends to me during the time, when I shared a room with his son Richard for almost three weeks and met many more interesting and helpful people through him and his friends and colleagues.
Later, I even managed, with his help, to "export" some cuttings of the "July" variety of the "White Muscat" grape to Germany, where this variety was not available. I grafted four vines with them. They are still growing today around our house. And just like this variety had been the favourite grape of Brian's wife in 1981, they are today my own wife's favourite.
