Brian GILBERT Obituary

GILBERT, Brian (George). On December 22, 2016, peacefully in the Special Care Unit of Bob Scott Retirement Village, Lower Hutt, in the presence of his family, aged 89 years. Brian was born in Portsmouth, England, with salt water running through his veins. He had a lifelong love of the sea and ships and gave proud service to the Royal Navy and HMNZ Dockyard. He lived for many years in Glenfield, Auckland, then, until recently, in Warkworth. Dearly loved husband of the late Lucy. Much loved Dad and father-in-law of Andrew and Christine, Sue and Ian, and Tim and Karyn. Loved granddad of Christopher and Kelly (USA), Jonathan, Ellie and Aaron, and great granddad of Iva. Loved brother of Peter (Australia) and uncle to nieces and nephews in Australia and England. A sweet, kind and modest man who will be missed by all his family and friends. Special thanks to the staff of Bob Scott Retirement Village for their superb care of Brian and the family. A private service and cremation will be held. "I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky, and all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by, and the wheel's kick and the wind's song and the white sail's shaking, and a grey mist on the sea's face and a grey dawn breaking."- John Masefield. Brian had a kind and happy personality, was very knowledgeable about many subjects and always had a story to tell!

I will remember Grandad as an ever-positive, ever-encouraging man. I can't recall a time when he was outwardly angry or upset.

I will remember his creativity and outside-the-box thinking. His interest in learning from reading and learning from doing, and his encouragement to me to do the same in appropriate proportions.

I will credit him, at least in part, for my interest in obscure facts and events, especially those related to historical events -- usually related to World War 2 or to Naval vessels or military aircraft.

I will remember trips to Devonport and Northhead. I will remember walks around the back yard. I will remember the hand-crafted garage, and the toy truck, and the trolley which saw many playing hours, the dimensions for which came in part from a photo of a bathtub. I will remember "feeling bored" and being handed books on RAF planes, or being taught lessons about the WW2 Guadalcanal campaign (among others).

I would like to think that his words and his actions have, consciously or otherwise, made me a better person. I would like to think that I have a positive influence on others around me, in part because of the positive influence he had on me.
