Very sorry to hear of Brenda's passing. Sorry, yet relieved too. Glad she is no longer suffering.
Most of my memories of Aunty Brenda are childhood ones. It was always really cool to visit the Parkers or better still, stay overnight.
Sitting up at the kids dinner table at Seven St, Island Bay. Age about 5 or 6? Don't slouch Michael! she would instruct. Straight back like this, giving a ramrod vertical example. I was always in awe how Aunty Brenda could sit so straight at the table. Now, every time I find myself slouching, I always think of Aunty Brenda's sound advice.
Taking over her lounge floor with Lego blocks for Africa. Ross and Greg had the biggest collection ever! Keep them on mat! she would insist. Limping away after stepping on one. In our defence, it was pretty difficult to keep them on the mat. Lego catapults have an amazing range...
Driving up to Waitarere beach for the school holidays. Greg, Ross and myself in the back. Mum and Aunty Brenda in the front. Singing our hearts out to Abba's, Money, Money, Money. I don't think the car had a radio back then, the mum's just started singing and us kids joined in. Fabulous memory, Abba would have been proud of us.
And last but not least, in Dec 2017 we visited Brenda at a rest home in Hamilton. I wanted to take a photo of her and mum together. I asked Brenda if she would mind. Getting out the spelling board, she doggedly spelt out If you must, with a twinkle in her eye. One top lady..!
She will be remembered with great fondness and affection.
Mum will miss her best friend dearly
