Bill CALDER Obituary

CALDER, Bill (William Hill)
February 27, 1940 - September 23, 2016
Husband, father, grandfather and dear friend. Beloved husband of Thea Philippo and the late Isobel Henshilwood, devoted father of Chris, Jenny (Steven) and Katie (Richie), stepfather of Samantha (Alex) and Timothy (Jeanne), cherished grandpa of Noah and Isaiah, Opa Bill of Sasha, Kira, Yasmin, Emilie and Jasper. Dear brother of the late Muriel (Peter) and of Mhoira (Brian), brother-in-law of Jan (Sally), and four sisters and their husbands in Holland. He had many nieces and nephews in Scotland and Australia. Born in Perth, Scotland, Bill immigrated to Canada in 1962, where he enjoyed sharing the outdoors in all seasons, from sailing to hiking to cross- country ski marathoning. With his love of books and his generous sense of humour, he was a faunt of knowledge and wisdom, which he was always willing to put selflessly at the service of those in need. He will be remembered and missed by his large family and by the countless friends whose lives he touched. A memorial service will be held at the Church of St. Andrew and St. Paul, Sherbrooke St. West at Redpath, on Wednesday, September 28, 2016 at 10.30 a.m. A reception to meet the family and to celebrate Bill's life will be held in Kildonan Hall after the service. In lieu of flowers if you wish, a donation may be made in memory of Bill to the Church of St. Andrew and St. Paul or The Isaiah 40 Foundation, both close to Bill's heart.

Dear Christopher, Katie and Jennie,

You may not remember me. I was a colleague of your mother's at Bialik many years ago, and through her, knew your dad as well. I loved both of your parents dearly and remember them with great fondness. I was the staff member who spoke about Isobel at the memorial service at the school after she passed away.

I met up with your father a number of times when I lived in the courtyard on Redpath just behind the Church of St. Andrew and St, Paul. He was either entering or leaving the Church to go to a meeting; those brief encounters were always joyous reunions. He told me that he was happily remarried, and kept me up to date with all of you.

I'd like to extend to you and to Bill's wife my sincere condolences upon the loss of a fine and wonderful man. I know that he left you with many memories and stories.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

Fondly,

Dear Chris, Jenny and Katie,
I have such fond memories of your family at Cape Cod, when we would be at Hunter's at the same time. We were very lucky that our parents took us all on such long vacations on the Cape. It was a magical time.
Your parents left a lasting impression because they were such wonderful, friendly people who were just amazing to be around. I feel blessed to have met them and you.
I am so sorry to learn that your father passed away. He was one of the most pleasant and kind people I've ever met, to this day. My sincere condolences. You will all be in my thoughts and prayers as I remember Bill with joy.

Dear Christopher, Jennie and Katie, so shocked and sad to see that you lost your dad so young. What a wonderful, warm, smart, funny, and incredibly patient man he was. Every time your mom brought our Bialik french class home, your dad always handled the invasion with such patience and a smile that was so genuine. He became another part of our class that we often talked about back in school (in french of course, or your mom would scowl at us). I know how much he will be missed. My sincerest condolences to you three kids and your families.

Dear Jenny and family,

It is with great sadness that I hear of the passing of your beloved father. You had a great dad. I will always remember Bill as being a kind, funny and gentle soul with a wide range of interests. Jenny you have shared countless anecdotes and stories of your father and many come to mind while writing this note. Thank you for those stories.

My most sincere condolences, my thoughts are with all of you.

Dear Thea and family,
We are so sorry to hear of dear Bill's passing. He was a sweet, gentle soul with a great sense of humour and wit that will be greatly missed. I will always remember how I last saw Bill just a few weeks ago, sitting in the sunlight on Samantha's patio, reading a book overlooking peaceful Trout lake--just enjoying being with his family in that beautiful place. Hugs to you all and wishing you peace and strength in this sad time.
