A very interesting and deep thinking man. Met him when he shifted to Mataura and had quite a few long talks with him as we both shared "handling retirement" - not an easy task for clergy. Rest in Peace friend.

Just updated it a bit more....
To Helen, Paul and John, your Dad, Uncle Bernie, Hart's brother was significant in our family. He always warmly welcomed us and enthusiastically celebrated life. Uncle Bernie wrote yearly letters keeping us updated with the work he was involved in. He officiated at our wedding, and travelled 2 x to California to stay with us. It was fun to see his excitement over going to Disneyland with us even though he lost his favorite hat. His prayers were always greatly appreciated. We had the privilege of visiting him in 2018 at his retirement home which had the walls adorned with all the family history. Bernie had spent countless hours on the family genealogy and the history of the Chatham Islands. Our prayers are with you at this time of loss. With Sympathy from Dan & Julie Hicks, Jasmine, Andrew and William Kich, Ben, Amanda and Avery Hicks, Naomi Hicks & Family, including Tui, Wendy & Katie, Jo, Phil and Aden

Bernie was a very humble man and lived a true Christian life. He didn't realise what a great effect he had on people he came in contact with during his work and our family owes him a great debt for help given at a very hard time.
We had a wonderful stay with him in his home in Mataura which we recall with pleasure. He was so entertaining and enjoyed cooking for us.
Our deepest sympathy and prayers are with his family, who he talked about with much pride and love. Unfortunately we can't get to Burnham to pay our respects to a very special man and a very respected former Padre but we will remember him.

Dear Helen and family,
I am so sorry to hear that the lovely Bernie has passed away. He will be remembered with such fondness for his wit, his freshly baked bread and his kind words. May he now rest in peace.
