I have only recently heard the sad news. During his time at Devonport School, I came to know Ben. He had such a great smile and a warm heart. So sorry at the loss of your lovely boy.

The two Bens (McNae and Goldson) were staying in a camp site near our boat and a guy came up to them and said: "Hey are you a musician?" (to McNae) and "what are you, a boxer?" (to Goldson). I helpfully said McNae looked like Bob Dylan and both the Bens looked at me bemused: "He wouldn't have known who Dylan was, he means the guy from One Direction!". (the handsome one apparently). Lovely boy, just figuring out (hard) what he wanted to do in life, what he thought about profound and lesser issues. He will be a profound loss to you - but to all of us, and to the world.

Isabelle,
So sorry to hear of your loss. Please know that you and your family will be kept in my prayers. As one who has also suffered a recent bereavement, about all you can hope to do at this time is to put one foot in front of the other. Gambatte kudasai.

I met Ben on the Spirit of NZ - the trip wouldn't have been the same without you dude. We became inseparable after that, you brought me so much happiness and love for that period. When we lost contact I put it down to the fact that it annoyed me this kid was more intelligent than I, i'll deeply miss our debates. I was fortunate enough to give you one last hug a few weeks before your passing. You were a unique individual with a heart of gold. Our memories I will treasure forever. My deepest condolences to the McNae family. RIP Ben xxx

I will never forget the grin on Ben's face whenever he came to visit to ask if I wanted to go outside and kick the ball. It gave me a great deal of pleasure to have a run around with Ben and I always enjoyed his company.
R.I.P. Ben.
With my deepest sympathy for the McNae family.

Sending my deepest love to the Mcnae family. I was introduced to Ben a couple years back by Sabrina and Dan. Us four sheared the most memorable of times. You could always count on Ben to brighten up your day. He was a true gentlemen. Ben and Dan were/are the best two brothers me and Sabrina could ask for. We were blessed for you to be in our lives. Forever love you kid.

Dear Helen and Kerry,
The day Ben walked into our lives we all gained a wonderful friend. Ben was handsome, smart, funny and kind. Great times and laughter were always guaranteed when Ben was around. Our family will cherish these times forever and never forget what an amazing person Ben was. Words cannot convey how much we miss Ben or the depth of love we felt for him. We have lost a great friend and our hearts are broken.

Words can not convey my heartfelt sorrow at your sudden tragic loss of a fine young man. I will never forget how Oliver looked to him for friendship when we first arrived. A friendship that Ben happily provided. Much love to you Helen, Kerry, Sam, Isabelle and Eva. In my thoughts and prayers.

Sending love to the Mcnae family, Ben was a great friend to Daniel and I. He was always a great time and there was never a dull moment when he was around. We went on many trips together that will never be forgotten; our first trip to Snowpark, many trips to Mt Ruapehu and most recently Matapouri which was such a great time, Many laughs were shared with the family. Dan and I will always remember the moments we had with Ben and we really treasure our friendship we shared with him. I remember meeting Ben in year 7 such a friendly boy we have stayed friends since then and I am very pleased he stayed a part of my life.
