Barrie EVANS Obituary

A very decent man and colleague. My (belated) sympathies to his family.

Dear Justine, I was shocked to hear today of Barrie's passing away. It was an honour to receive his meticulous, considerate care. Even though we didn't always agree on methods, I always had absolute faith that Barrie was giving me the very best treatment he had available, and that he wanted only the best outcome for me. I am very saddened that we have lost such a caring, personable gentleman, with his wonderful sense of humour and fascinating tales, alongside his constant professionalism. Our heartfelt condolences to you Justine, and Thomas and Charlotte, from Pam and Keith.

I was shocked and saddened to hear of Barrie's death. During our training together at the Royal Marsden Barrie was a constant source of advice, support and above all great stories, what a wonderful sense of humour. We had some amazing role models and I know that Barrie practiced the art and not just the science of medicine. This is a very sad loss.

Dear Justine, Thomas and Charlotte, I have been trying to find the right words to convey my feelings at the huge loss of your husband and father, who was so very proud of you all.

He will be deeply missed by all that had the pleasure to know him, even for those like me, whom met him through trying personal times as a new mum and patient.
Barrie was not only professional and knowledgable but also had that rare quality of being humble, his warm heart showed in his kindness and caring for his patients.
I never felt like a number, both Barrie and Justine seemed more like friends to my family and I during these past 15 years.
He put up with the tears and fears I had, kept me strong and on track with words of wisdom and lots of humour.

I will never forget him and will always be grateful to him and you as a family for letting him work so hard, over such long hours to help so many.

For an oncologist, Barrie could surely lay claim to saving the sanity of a lot of us. The medical treatment perhaps came with the training and professional experience - but the kindness, humour, practicality and wisdom - that was all him and those were the things that kept me on an even keel during treatment.

I hope he's somewhere now with a rod in one hand, single malt in the other and a dog at his feet.

Please accept our deepest sympathy on the loss of a husband and Father. Tony and I were saddened to hear Barrie had passed away recently. Justine you were both so kind and understanding back in April 2011 when we first met at your Epsom office. The care and concern provided us both with much needed confidence to travel a path too many have to follow. We will miss the opportunity to meet and listen to Barrie's thoughts as we move onto a new treatment regime in the New Year.

It is solely due to Barrie that I am still here. Since 1997 he has been my rock in the hard times and a guiding light in others. Justine Charlotte and Thomas,I am so sorry for your loss. He was the best of men , a shining example of what your oncologist should be like, interested in you as a person, full of tales, twinkles and never a visible panic about anything that came up over the years. He will be sadly missed and never forgotten.

I first meet Barrie as a frightened 21 year old . 24 years ago at oncology . You were new to our country and I was about to start my chemotherapy .
You were so kind to me and we became friends as you guard me along with my treatment. Thanks to you I have my own 21 year old daughter today. You are my hero and you will be sadly missed.

To Justine and family. I am so sorry for your loss. I was Barrie's patient 26 years ago in Palmerston North and have had such a full life since then, living in place such as Sudan, Afghanistan and now Australia! Barrie was such a humble man and very interested in me as a person not just my illness. I had a particularly rough patch 1/2 way thru my chemo and he came over from his clinic in Napier to visit me in my home in Hastings (maybe trying to delay having to get back on the little plane with Dr Bidder as pilot!!). He actually followed me for 16 years post chemo - even tho I have had nothing Hodgkins related again! Thinking of you all and much love to you all. I am VERY grateful for your husband and Dad for all he did to allow people like me to live! You need to be thanked too - as I am sure there was much sacrifice on your parts at times too. God bless. For the last 15 years you, along with Barrie have been a very large part of our lives, Dell and I both know that without the "gentle" persuasion from Barrie that Dell would most unlikely be with us now.

Barrie , My father Peter and I were deaply saddened to read/hear of your passing.
My Dad simply woud not be here today without the help and treatment you organised initially over 10yrs ago treating his illness. I know many of your patients and their families will be very sad to read/hear this news. Our thoughts and sympathies go to your own family and friends at this sad time.
