Our deepest condolences to your family.
Dear Mr. Walsh, we miss you.
The exchange program created between our two schools has continued for thirty years - even after your retirement, and now mine.
What we built together all those years ago has had a lasting impact, not only on my school but on many others in Hiroshima. It became a spark that encouraged international understanding across the region.
Those early days were different - we used film cameras, sent faxes, and shared ideas over good food and drink. I can still picture you, with a warm smile and a touch of colour in your cheeks, speaking with passion about education and about family. Through those moments we built a bond of genuine trust and friendship.
I also remember hearing about your father's mind against Japan, having been wounded in World War II. Even with that history, you chose to lead the way in creating our exchange. That took courage and heart - and for that, I thank you deeply.
There´s a French chanson called "The Soul of Poets" (L´âme des poètes). It says:
"After the poets have disappeared,
Their songs still run through the streets."
Even when the people who began it are gone, the spirit of good education and friendship will live on.
Rest in peace - from Hiroshima, Japan.
