Shocked and saddened to learn today of Tony's decease last June. Tony and I were colleagues and friends from many, many years ago in the time of the National Art Gallery, where he worked for over 30 years including at Te Papa. Tony, Joy, my Mother, Vesta and I would have lunch when Joy was in Wellington. He was a very loving, caring son of his Mother:)
Tony did an excellent job as Curator of works on paper at Te papa with many intimate, interesting exhibitions in the small gallery dedicated to that medium. During the sesqui-centennial celebrations, 1990 I borrowed back from the National Collection works donated by the NZAFA for the 'Bequest to the Nation Exhibition'. It was Tony who ensured that the works were lent in good condition, properly framed. And when the three resident institutions threw a humdinger of a party, Tony was the 'life 'n soul' partying all night in the Academy galleries.
We shared a love of the Arts and as friends enjoyed dinners, parties, movies and good conversation and laughter- all the things which make for friendship.
I have great sadness at your parting. As a deeply religious man I know that you are at peace with God. Aroha nui my dear friend.
