Alan applied a strong intelligence along with a passionate commitment when sharing his beliefs about what could be done for those he cared about: his family, friends, students; whether through an active Christian ministry or formal and informal academic and community contributions. The man from Ashburton presented a strong protestant ethic to everything he did. Let me add quietly, he had in influence at different phases of my life too. Thanks Alan, it was a privilege to know you (and your family). Go in peace.
