My sincerest condolences to Alan's wife and family. I am so sad as I have just found out that Alan had died. I met Alan when I worked at the National Gallery as we often walked into the building together in the early morning. He became a good friend, mentor and colleague. I still remember his love of the Brandenburg Concertos and think of him still when I listen to this glorious music. Thank you Alan for sharing music, friendship, and touching my life in a beautiful way. Sarah Rennie

I have treasured memories of Alan growing up in Days bay and Eastbourne. He also gave me my first ever Job. I still remember many of our conversations as we drove around the Bays to the Museum in Wellington; we chatted about everything from Dolphin pod behaviour to how many ute trips it would take to move a Fin whale skeleton. (Which we eventually did - but we needed a truck for the jawbone.) All my thoughts and love to the family - Diana, Julia and Adrian. I'm sorry I can't be there in person, but I am with you in spirit and every time I'll look out into the ocean, I will remember him.

A dear friend of more than 50 years, and a highly talented colleague. A sad loss to New Zealand marine science.
