Barbara MCNABB Obituary

BARBARA JEAN McNABB On December 20, 2023, at Lakeshore Lodge, in Toronto, Barbara passed away peacefully, at the age of 101. Predeceased by her brother, Allan; Barbara will be remembered fondly by her nieces and nephews, David (Kate), Andrew (Anne), Janice and Marcia (Nezam). Barbara was born and raised in Toronto, where she attended North Toronto Collegiate and graduated from the University of Toronto in 1944. She had a successful career as an editor then in public relations, starting with Ryerson Press followed by her own firm, McNabb Public Relations. Barbara had a reputation as a tough and determined businesswoman with very high standards for herself and her associates. During her retirement, Barbara spent a number of years in rural southwestern Ontario, where she pursued her interests around specialty farming and her Scottish heritage. The family would like to thank the dedicated staff at both Sunrise Richmond Hill and Lakeshore Lodge that provided such excellent care to Barbara.

On this past Tuesday I found a letter that Barbara had sent to me which also included my grand daughter Ninnea who was 9 years old at the time. We used to go down to Barbara's and help her with things around Grapeshade. I first met Barbara years ago when she first came back to a ranshackle of a historical home and a place she loved dearly and put her whole heart and soul into restoring. I was born and raised in Melbourne and often went there when I was very young. I had great admiration for Barbara, she would come on the bus from Toronto and when she was done with whatever chores she had come to do she would stand out in front of the house alongside the busy highway and catch the bus back to Toronto. She had a typewriter that had to weigh fifty pounds and she would haul it upstairs and downstairs all the time wearing a pair of high heeled shoes. Every fall we picked up the osage oranges and she spread them out on the floors through out the house and I would scold her because I was afraid they would cause her to trip and fall. I have thought of her so often since she left, she was a wonderful lady and a great friend we shared a lot of "history" together. I have a lot of great memories of our time and events spent together that I will cherish. Barbara was so proud of Grapeshade.

On behalf of the Glencoe & District, Historical, Society, and the broader community of South West Middlesex, we would like to extend our condolences to Barbara`s extended family

In her 80s when other people her age were deeply into retirement and slowing down, Barbara was ramping up with her visions and projects. I enjoyed collaborating with Barbara very much, and she continues to be an inspiration

She taught us that we do not retire if we want to live full lives until the end , we rewire and carry-on

(My father, Stewart Simpson, did the same. He also lived a long And productive life.)

Very sorry for your loss. Last we heard, she was at Grapeshade in Melbourne. Did not know she returned to Toronto. She was a friend of our late great aunt Victoria McNabb, not related. Regards.
