Barbara DRUCKER Obituary

BARBARA LYNNE DRUCKER Barbara Lynne Drucker died peacefully, at home from lung cancer on January 1, 2024. Born in Sarnia, Ontario, on July 8, 1948, to Margaret and Kenneth Cooper, Barbara is survived by her three younger sisters, Terrie, Beverley and Karen. Barbara attended the University of Waterloo where she majored in History. While at Waterloo, Barbara joined the Young Progressive Conservative Association which led to lifelong friendships. In 1974, Barbara married Tom, the legal adviser to the Bata Shoe Organization. After her marriage and the birth of her two daughters, Barbara earned a Master's Degree in Education from the University of Toronto. Barbara then taught at the School of Early Childhood Studies at Toronto Metropolitan University, where she coordinated the field placements for students in years 1 to 3. She served on the Boards of the Toronto French School, St. Clement's School, and Bishop's College School in Quebec. Mental health care was a further focus for Barbara, and she also sat on the Boards of the Hincks Foundation and The Gatehouse. Barbara valued loyalty and authenticity. Above all, Barbara was utterly devoted to Tom and their family. Barbara ensured the well-being of her parents and Tom's mother, Fanny, as they faced the challenges of old age. Fanny loved Barbara as the daughter she never had. Barbara's daughters, Alexi and Caroline, were a constant source of pride and joy. She also took great pleasure in the development of her two warm-hearted, enquiring and fun-loving granddaughters, Rory and Agnes. Barbara's strong character enabled her to be steadfast in the face of adversity. She was principled, insightful and kind, with a lively sense of humour. As a hardworking and capable multitasker, she achieved much in her life. Barbara loved life. Her happiest moments included cutting lavender in her garden to the sound of the languid buzzing of bees. Barbara loved to cook for her family and friends, particularly on birthdays and at Christmas, when an expansive tree would be profusely decorated to the music of John Denver, Phil Spector (she especially loved Motown) and Barbra Streisand. Barbara requested a small funeral with direct family only before the release of her obituary. Barbara preferred a later celebration of her life. In lieu of flowers, Barbara encouraged donations to the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation.

Dear Family,
I'm so very sad to hear about Barbara's passing. Girls, your mother was my babysitter when I was 5 and we were reunited many years later when our mothers became best friends at Kensington Gardens. We then became fast friends and your mother was so caring and so dedicated to make our mothers' lives the best they could be in the nursing home. She helped me so much too. I just loved Barbara and she spoke so lovingly about her family. I loved hearing about her little granddaughters. Barbara was an amazing, caring, strong and beautiful friend and I will miss her dearly.

We will miss Barbara and all the lovely chats we had out by her garden. Barbara and Tom, you gave us glimpses of another world so unfamiliar to us, and were always so interested in our work in our community too.

Dear Tom, Alexi, & Caroline.
My heart & my head is with all of you in this sad period of time.
In the words of Cesare Pavese "we do not remember days, we remember moments".
Barbara was both a committed colleague & a cherished friend during our "work-years" together.
And, the added roles of wife & mother were never overlooked.
I know you will all have unlimited memories to share, tell, & re-tell!
Please use these memories in the "moments" ahead.
With admiration & love for all of you. Anne Ellison

Dear Tom and Family,
I am so sorry for your loss. Barbara was a good friend and colleague to me, both at Toronto Metropolitan University and at The Gatehouse. My fondest memory is her and I is our shared laughter over the Vicar of Dibley series and the distinctly Church of England (Anglican) humour. I will miss her greatly.

Dearest Lexi and Caroline, I am so sorry to hear of your mom´s passing. I remember her fondly. My favourite memory is eating homemade tacos and sleeping over, while you mom doted on us, making everything special.
I will keep your mom, and your family in my prayers.
Sending my love to you all,
Jenn

This is sad news. I too joined the Young Progressive Conservatives at school (UofT) and met Barbara over the years at meetings, conventions and most memorably on the campaign trail for various candidates we supported. Always a pleasure to work with. I saw her last at dinner for Roy McMurtry "before Covid" where we sat together and had a great catch up. A real loss and my thoughts are with Tom and the whole family.
