Leona Ruth Johnson, a loving mother and cherished educator, passed away surrounded by family on May 13, 2024. Born on July 26, 1935, in Preeceville, Saskatchewan, Leona was the third of six children born to Ewald and Bertha Stubbe. She is survived by sisters Audrey Rosaasen and Delores Jakubowski. Predeceased by Barry Stubbe, Ewald Stubbe, Bertha Stubbe, Dennis Stubbe and Doreen Saughmehyer.
Leona completed her primary education in a one-room schoolhouse at Robinson Creek School and graduated from Preeceville High School. Inspired to become a teacher by her Aunt Pearl Stubbe and older sister, Doreen Saughmehyer. Leona married Wayne Johnson on November 14, 1954, in Preeceville, SK. After serving in the Air Force, the couple relocated to Zealandia to work the Johnson family farm. Her teaching experience during this time includes kindergarten through grade 3 and in special education. She taught in many communities within Saskatchewan. Leona took a 10-year hiatus from teaching to being a stay-at-home mom, raising her children Kimberly, Laurie, and Kevin. Leona completed her postgraduate degree in Special Education at U of S. Leona modelled innovative teaching practices. Leona was an active leader in the Saskatchewan Teachers' Federation (STF) in Preeceville and served on the board of the Mackenzie Center, supporting adults with special needs. She found joy in the company of her church community and built fond memories with "The Girls" from the WIG Coffee Group.
In retirement, Leona moved to Saskatoon, where she enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren. Leona and Wayne continued to enjoy travelling adventures in their camper van, once again travelling coast to coast in Canada and to the USA and many international destinations.
Leona's legacy is one of love, dedication, and service. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her. In lieu of flowers, donations can be directed to Sherbrooke Foundation at Etransfer:
