I am so sorry to learn belatedly of this. My father raved about Warwick for his talent for investigative journalism.

Warwick gave me a second start as a journalist and writer. He took a chance on work I submitted. I'm not sure he ever knew how much that meant to me. I'm glad I was able to pay public tribute to him one night at the Journalism awards. He had the vision, as everyone notes. He had the brains, the style, the toughness and the dedication to have Metro hum so well, and to make it such a strong force. He also had the best sort of enquiring mind and a willingness to avoid default settings of opinion. He was a distinguished journalist and man. My condolences to Robyn and his family and close friends.

Dear Robyn, it has been a long time since writing for North and South but I wanted to say that there was an empty feeling in me when I read that Warwick had died. I guess he has had a terribly hard time with illness but it is still sad, he was a real inspiration, much braver than I in tackling tough issues. I was really grateful that he chose the side of phonics way back when he wrote the Metro article Adventures in the Reading Trade. I still remember him in my University office quizzing me about it. And I think he might have helped me get that brief moment of fame in writing Learning Issues for North and South which was a lot of fun and I wish I had that special journalist DNA to get that 1000 words out every month and not run out of ideas as I did. Anyway, he was a great guy, there are very few of that calibre, and I will miss him. Fond best wishes, tom
