Murray Wood Obituary

WOOD, Murray John. Tragically taken from us on 22nd February 2011 at 12:51pm, aged 56 years. Most dearly loved love of my life, husband of Nicki, adored , admired and truly loved by his children Bradley, John, Kimberley, Mark, Adam, and Ben. Dearly loved only son of Jack and the late Lorna Wood, and a cherished, loved big brother of Lynda, also loved son-in-law of Eileen Poulsen (Rangiora). Murray touched the lives of so many people in many different ways. His music will live on in our hearts, our minds and his children. Our loss is immeasurable. If music is the food of love, play on Messages may be sent to the Wood family c/- 19 London Street, Christchurch 8013. A service celebrating Murray's life will be held in the Aurora Centre, cnr Memorial Avenue and Greers Road on Friday March 11th at 10:30am, private cremation thereafter. I didn't fully understand the meaning of the expression "Generous to a fault" until I first met Murray some twenty-five years ago.
And I didn't fully grasp the concept of 'multi-tasking' until I'd drop in to Magnum Mac to find him (invariably) fully engaged on the phone, but never too engaged to carry on a simultaneous 'chat' with me, him tapping away on his computer, me on the receptionist's.

And I'd be willing to bet the person on the other end of the phone line would have no inkling that Murray's considerable intellectual focus was being in any way divided or diverted.

Other memories include the Beatles concert in the Park where Murray, having effortlessly reverse engineered George Martin's iconic string quartet backing for 'Eleanor Rigby', served it up for us in real time from his stack of keyboards, unaided by any sequencing software, with all of its authentic genius intact.

We'll never see his like again, and it's a privilege to have known the one and only Murray.

Murray are such a good mate - you did so much for me 2008-Dec 2010, and for Canterbury Community how you kept regional TV afloat and gave so much opportunity to so many - I really miss you. Fav memories of you playing piano for our TV girls, advising me over a cup of coffee - letting me take you to brekfast@Sheraton, the concerts we shared with you - meeting your beautiful Nicki - you are 120% amazing & I admire you so much.

Murray always had time for a chat at my reception desk after the board meeting before he caught his flight back to Christchurch from Auckland. We had a mutual friend and we shared stories and laughs about him. Sorry I missed having a coffee with him at the airport on one of his last trips up here - I was busy!!! If only....... RIP Murray - you will be sorely missed by all that knew you. Wilma Cox
