I met Dorothy Butler through her shop in the eighties. I had an interest and love of children's literature and she fuelled that passion. I read her book about what books to read and enjoy for which age groups. I loved going to her shop and could hang out there for hours. Even my children when they were younger would hang out reading, buying books and taking in her suggestions. Doroththy Butler has inspired reading in a huge number of young people and old. Myself I was a student at university studying children's literature. I have found memories of her in her Ponsonby shop. My sympathy goes to the family. She has served you and the people of Aotearoa well. May God Bless you at this time.

I am so sorry I could not make the funeral due to sickness of my grandson. My thoughts are with you all and I have been with you in my heart from Waiatarua at this time.
My family and I have VERY fond memories of Dorothy. She was part of our life at Kare Kare, and I had the priviledge of teaching music to lots of her grandchildren. Celia and her sons Rohan and Joel

I used to refer to Dorothy as my mentor- even though we never knew each other well.My book shop NextPagePlease! was in many ways, inspired by Dorothy's love for children reading good books and the huge value placed by Dorothy on children being read to by their parents. I carried many of her messages about reading into my my bookshop- with Dorothy Butler always in my mind! I loved talking to Dorothy about book suggestions for my own children 30+ years ago, and tried to carry her sincere style of helping readers into my own bookshop and to the readers! Heartfelt thanks Dorothy- another precious part of history leaves us but never forgotten.

I never knew Dorothy Butler in real life, but I met her through her books: Babies Need Books, then Five to Eight, then her exceptional two-volume autobiography. And then I found a copy of Cushla and Her Books in a used bookstore, and then at last I found My Brown Bear Barney, and so on and on. She has been a mentor to me as a person and as a mother, even though I never had the honor of meeting her in real life. Thank you for all of your wonderful words, Mrs. Butler.

Dear Dorothy, you were loved and respected by me and my family. From my first visit to your shop as a young teacher in Northland, through the making of "Babies Need Books" for TV, and the memorable time when I escaped from home with my two boys, aged almost 5 and almost 2 and stayed at Karekare. You were magnificent - hospitable, understanding and generous. The best moment was the wet afternoon I spent reading to my older boy on your sofa for three hours as the younger slept on my lap. Farewell

Through her Bookshop, and the Children's Literature Association, Dorothy guided many thousands of parents to quality books for their children. She educated us to recognise brilliance in children's literature, and gave us the opportunity to meet authors of the calibre of Margaret Mahy. Her love of children and promoting excellence in books for them was lifelong. Thank you Dorothy for the precious gift you gave to children and families. Rest in peace.
