Marcus played beautifully at our wedding at Chingford Park, a good few years ago now, solo on the violin as well as a part of the group Marannan. He was a big part of making our day special and we are both so sad that he is gone.

There was a genius about Marcus that was his personality and his music. My children were awestruck when they met him, having enjoyed hours of his entertainment on Spot On - my four-year-old wanted to know how he managed to get into our television. I was privileged to have spent as many hours playing music with him in the 70s and 80s and to play alongside him in his brilliant performances at Wellington Folk Festivals, notably in some of the Final Concerts held in the old Opera House. New Zealand has lost a special musician and precious entertainer.

One of the many folkies of Aotearoa who held you in awe for your virtuosity and showmanship and later came to know you a little behind the scenes ... Marcus, you made me laugh and cry - sometimes within seconds in one artful set, yet the spirit was even more precious. and a huge thanks for your song about the girl who loved another girl, very brave for a man in the 80s or any time to write and perform such a song. It meant a huge amount to me. also for singing in te reo and your love of the natural world. We will carry you in our hearts and sing your songs. arohanui. Mary Hubble, Wellington

I was in awe of Marcus. He was so good at zoology, and performed music so brilliantly. And yet somehow, we were classmates.

So although the photo is fuzzy, my memories of him are clear.

In particular I recall him being concerned abut his experimental animals. Saying wryly, "Physiology is never having to say you're sorry".

For the moment, I am yet again on that long ago Dunedin shore.
