I worked with Sir John on the NZ FPA Board. He became a mentor and a friend and I was so terribly sad to learn of his death. His wisdom so generously and kindly shared was always appreciated; and he was always a true gentleman. My sincere sympathy to all of his family

It was a great pleasure to be able to meet John last year and spend time with him while Alison was able to go to her appointments. He was a man of great wisdom but also was down to earth and able to connect and talk about everyday things! Always enjoyed his life stories! Also a man who wanted to see a job completed well so saw this stubborness streak in him despite his medical frailty. I helped him doing his rails down stairs in the midst of rain and wind sometimes! He had a great wit too as I was walking behind him up the internal stairs of his Temple Street home he said "If I fall it will be a safe landing" My condolonces to Alison and all his children and grandchildren.

As scared medical students on the wards for the first time, we received the most reassuring advice probably in our undergraduate medical education. Professor Scott told us to be ourselves when meeting patients. I pass this wisdom on, when I meet worried or scared looking health professional students.
Thank you Professor, you made a difference.

John was an inspiring teacher for me at medical school during the 1970s. I met up with him subsequently in the context of the Skeptics Society. John spoke out against the vagaries of psuedoscience in all its forms, and the resultant harms such beliefs may cause. He has always demonstrated the courage of his convictions. A dear and special man, sadly missed.
